The Urantia Book Internet School (UBIS) is a free, multi-lingual online school functioning under the sponsorship of Urantia Foundation. One of the purposes of Urantia Foundation is to "effectuate means and methods" to disseminate the teachings of The Urantia Book. UBIS is one means of accomplishing this.

This online school provides a safe and friendly virtual classroom for individual readers around the world as well as small groups of truth seekers to study and share insights.

Philosophy and Pedagogy

The authors of The Urantia Book are mandated to expand cosmic consciousness and enhance spiritual perception of truth seekers; therefore they are the real teachers of truth.

It is the purpose of UBIS to help and support their mandate by facilitating the exploration of the truths revealed. The online school provides tools to assist each student to experience the teachings first-hand in a non-interpretive, non-invasive, and nonsectarian pedagogy.

The school is modeled after the “question-answer” Jesusonian teaching approach and is designed to help students:
  • Develop an understanding of complex concepts.
  • Expand comprehension by delving deeper into the teachings.
  • Learn teamwork by sharing insights with fellow students.
  • Gain experience in presenting and sharing the teachings of the book.

Since its beginning in 1999, UBIS has undergone a series of technical innovations and is now based on Moodle, a widely used, multilingual, educational platform. Courses are currently offered in English, Spanish, French, and Portuguese with additional languages under development.

Teacher-Facilitators (TFs)

UBIS TFs are dedicated volunteers:
  • Who are experienced readers, familiar with The Urantia Book, havingread it in its entirety and studying it over a period of several years.
  • Who successfully completed at least three UBIS courses and receivedrecommendations from three TFs.
  • Who completed an extensive Teacher Training Program.
  • Who have committed several hours a week for five months to develop, design, and facilitate their course.

Course Organization

UBIS courses are free and are designed for beginner, intermediate, or advanced students of The Urantia Book.

The academic year consists of three trimesters with enrollment and registration occurring during the first full two weeks of September, January, and April. Each trimester is ten weeks in duration beginning with orientation week, followed by four periods of two weeks each, and concluding with a summary week.

Each period consists of a response week followed by a week for online discussion. On Monday of response week, students will find a list of six questions posted by the TF.

Each student is expected to select three of the six study questions and respond to them.

On Sunday evening of that week, the responses will be posted so that on Monday morning of discussion week, the responses will be available to the class for discussion.

This biweekly schedule continues for four periods for a total of eight weeks. During each discussion week the TF may introduce new topics, ask additional questions, emphasize emerging thought gems, or redirect the discussion as appropriate.

During summary week the student is expected to write a brief summarizing essay on one of three suggested topics or a topic of the student’s choice. This week is also the opportunity for farewells and exchanging emails as desired.
